Data Mining for the Masses, Second Edition

Data Mining for the Masses, Second Edition
By:Matthew North
Published on 2016-01-08 by

We live in a world that generates tremendous amounts of data-more than ever before. In business, and in our personal lives, we use smartphones and tablets, web sites and watches; with dozens of apps and interfaces to shop, learn, entertain and inform. Businesses increasingly use technology to interact with consumers to provide marketing, customer service, product information and more. All of this technological activity generates data-data that can be useful in many ways. Data mining can help to identify interesting patterns and messages that exist, often hidden beneath the surface. In this modern age of information systems, it is easier than ever before to extract meaning from data. From classification to prediction, data mining can help. In Data Mining for the Masses, Second Edition, professor Matt North-a former risk analyst and software engineer at eBay-uses simple examples and clear explanations with free, powerful software tools to teach you the basics of data mining. In this Second Edition, implementations of these examples are offered in both an updated version of the RapidMiner software, and in the popular R Statistical Package. You've got more data than ever before and you know it's got value, if only you can figure out how to get to it. This book can show you how. Let's start digging! Author's Note: The first edition of this text continues to be available for download, free of charge as a PDF file, from the GlobalText online library.

A data warehouse is a database, which is used for data analysis and reporting purposes. When a data warehouse is used in business applications, a requirement is that data is processed and refreshed in a timely fashion. Typically, data warehouses are updated in a batch fashion. But the delay in this off-line update can not meet the high demand of real-time updating. Active data warehousing is considered to be an alternative to the traditional data warehousing mechanism. It provides a better way to process real-time data in order to achieve a higher consistency between the stored information and the latest data updates. One of the key components of performing real-time data integration is the join between the incoming data stream and a disk relation. There is a heated discussion about the trade-off between the throughput and memory usage in streambased join algorithms. Many efforts have been made in the stream-based join research area to figure out the best practice. R-MESHJOIN is a novel and improved streambased join algorithm, which could tune the memory allocation of key components. On the one hand, R-MESHJOIN removes the dependency between the number of iterations to bring the disk relation into memory and the size of partitions in an internal queue of the stream data. On the other hand, the R-MESHJOIN algorithm is based on equi-join, which means the join performed is based on join attribute equality. In some scenarios, the stream-based join is not limited to equi-join. Similarity join (also known as non-equi join) is also required. Clearly, an improved algorithm is needed for handling similar scenarios. This thesis proposes a trie-based data structure for performing non-equi stream-based joins. To handle the similarity join scenario and store the matching attribute, we build an ordered tree data structure based on a trie. The join attribute is stored in the trie. The trie-based similarity join structure is integrated with R-MESHJOIN. To perform a non-equi join based on R-MESHJOIN, the algorithm traverses the trie to complete the fuzzy match with the join attribute and picks up the corresponding tuple as a result. A prototype of the trie-based data structure and integrated R-MESHJOIN algorithm have been implemented and the overheads of the algorithm are measured.

Feature Engineering for Machine Learning

Feature Engineering for Machine Learning
By:Alice Zheng,Amanda Casari
Published on 2018-03-23 by |O'Reilly Media, Inc.|

Feature engineering is a crucial step in the machine-learning pipeline, yet this topic is rarely examined on its own. With this practical book, you’ll learn techniques for extracting and transforming features—the numeric representations of raw data—into formats for machine-learning models. Each chapter guides you through a single data problem, such as how to represent text or image data. Together, these examples illustrate the main principles of feature engineering. Rather than simply teach these principles, authors Alice Zheng and Amanda Casari focus on practical application with exercises throughout the book. The closing chapter brings everything together by tackling a real-world, structured dataset with several feature-engineering techniques. Python packages including numpy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, and Matplotlib are used in code examples. You’ll examine: Feature engineering for numeric data: filtering, binning, scaling, log transforms, and power transforms Natural text techniques: bag-of-words, n-grams, and phrase detection Frequency-based filtering and feature scaling for eliminating uninformative features Encoding techniques of categorical variables, including feature hashing and bin-counting Model-based feature engineering with principal component analysis The concept of model stacking, using k-means as a featurization technique Image feature extraction with manual and deep-learning techniques

Data Warehousing and Data Mining Techniques for Cyber Security

Data Warehousing and Data Mining Techniques for Cyber Security
By:Anoop Singhal
Published on 2007-04-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

The application of data warehousing and data mining techniques to computer security is an important emerging area, as information processing and internet accessibility costs decline and more and more organizations become vulnerable to cyber attacks. These security breaches include attacks on single computers, computer networks, wireless networks, databases, or authentication compromises. This book describes data warehousing and data mining techniques that can be used to detect attacks. It is designed to be a useful handbook for practitioners and researchers in industry, and is also suitable as a text for advanced-level students in computer science.
