DW 2.0: The Architecture for the Next Generation of Data Warehousing

DW 2.0: The Architecture for the Next Generation of Data Warehousing
By:W.H. Inmon,Derek Strauss,Genia Neushloss
Published on 2010-07-28 by Elsevier

DW 2.0: The Architecture for the Next Generation of Data Warehousing is the first book on the new generation of data warehouse architecture, DW 2.0, by the father of the data warehouse. The book describes the future of data warehousing that is technologically possible today, at both an architectural level and technology level. The perspective of the book is from the top down: looking at the overall architecture and then delving into the issues underlying the components. This allows people who are building or using a data warehouse to see what lies ahead and determine what new technology to buy, how to plan extensions to the data warehouse, what can be salvaged from the current system, and how to justify the expense at the most practical level. This book gives experienced data warehouse professionals everything they need in order to implement the new generation DW 2.0. It is designed for professionals in the IT organization, including data architects, DBAs, systems design and development professionals, as well as data warehouse and knowledge management professionals. * First book on the new generation of data warehouse architecture, DW 2.0. * Written by the |father of the data warehouse|, Bill Inmon, a columnist and newsletter editor of The Bill Inmon Channel on the Business Intelligence Network. * Long overdue comprehensive coverage of the implementation of technology and tools that enable the new generation of the DW: metadata, temporal data, ETL, unstructured data, and data quality control.

Data Warehousing Study Guide

Data Warehousing Study Guide
By:Dr Noah Ras
Published on 2018-11-19 by Student Study Guides

A data warehouse is a relational database that is designed for query and analysis rather than for transaction processing. It usually contains historical data derived from transaction data, but can include data from other sources. Data warehouses separate analysis workload from transaction workload and enable an organization to consolidate data from several sources. In addition to a relational database, a data warehouse environment can include an extraction, transportation, transformation, and loading (ETL) solution, online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining capabilities, client analysis tools, and other applications that manage the process of gathering data and delivering it to business users.

Testing the Data Warehouse Practicum

Testing the Data Warehouse Practicum
By:Doug Vucevic,Wayne Yaddow
Published on 2012-08 by Trafford Publishing

The quality of a data warehouse (DWH) is the elusive aspect of it, not because it is hard to achieve [once we agree what it is], but because it is difficult to describe. We propose the notion that quality is not an attribute or a feature that a product has to possess, but rather a relationship between that product and each and every stakeholder. More specifically, the relationship between the software quality and the organization that produces the products is explored. Quality of data that populates the DWH is the main concern of the book, therefore we propose a definition for data quality as: |fitness to serve each and every purpose|. Methods are proposed throughout the book to help readers achieve data warehouse quality.

Dimensional Modeling: In a Business Intelligence Environment

Dimensional Modeling: In a Business Intelligence Environment
By:Chuck Ballard,Daniel M. Farrell,Amit Gupta,Carlos Mazuela,Stanislav Vohnik,IBM Redbooks
Published on 2012-07-31 by IBM Redbooks

In this IBM Redbooks publication we describe and demonstrate dimensional data modeling techniques and technology, specifically focused on business intelligence and data warehousing. It is to help the reader understand how to design, maintain, and use a dimensional model for data warehousing that can provide the data access and performance required for business intelligence. Business intelligence is comprised of a data warehousing infrastructure, and a query, analysis, and reporting environment. Here we focus on the data warehousing infrastructure. But only a specific element of it, the data model - which we consider the base building block of the data warehouse. Or, more precisely, the topic of data modeling and its impact on the business and business applications. The objective is not to provide a treatise on dimensional modeling techniques, but to focus at a more practical level. There is technical content for designing and maintaining such an environment, but also business content. For example, we use case studies to demonstrate how dimensional modeling can impact the business intelligence requirements for your business initiatives. In addition, we provide a detailed discussion on the query aspects of BI and data modeling. For example, we discuss query optimization and how you can determine performance of the data model prior to implementation. You need a solid base for your data warehousing infrastructure . . . . a solid data model.

Data Warehouse Designs

Data Warehouse Designs
By:Fon Silvers
Published on 2011-12-14 by CRC Press

Market Basket Analysis (MBA) provides the ability to continually monitor the affinities of a business and can help an organization achieve a key competitive advantage. Time Variant data enables data warehouses to directly associate events in the past with the participants in each individual event. In the past however, the use of these powerful tools in tandem led to performance degradation and resulted in unactionable and even damaging information. Data Warehouse Designs: Achieving ROI with Market Basket Analysis and Time Variance presents an innovative, soup-to-nuts approach that successfully combines what was previously incompatible, without degradation, and uses the relational architecture already in place. Built around two main chapters, Market Basket Solution Definition and Time Variant Solution Definition, it provides a tangible how-to design that can be used to facilitate MBA within the context of a data warehouse. Presents a solution for creating home-grown MBA data marts Includes database design solutions in the context of Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, and Teradata relational database management systems (RDBMS) Explains how to extract, transform, and load data used in MBA and Time Variant solutions The book uses standard RDBMS platforms, proven database structures, standard SQL and hardware, and software and practices already accepted and used in the data warehousing community to fill the gaps left by most conceptual discussions of MBA. It employs a form and language intended for a data warehousing audience to explain the practicality of how data is delivered, stored, and viewed. Offering a comprehensive explanation of the applications that provide, store, and use MBA data, Data Warehouse Designs provides you with the language and concepts needed to require and receive information that is relevant and actionable.

|The goal of this survey was to determine the extent to which data mining technology is being used by ARL member institutions, researchers, libraries and and administrations. The survey also hoped to elicit ideas and opinions concerning the potential role of libraries in supporting data mining and data warehousing in research institutions. The first seven survey questions focus on data mining and data warehousing activities at the institutional level. The remaining questions explore the current library use of data mining technology and opportunities for future use. Since data warehouses are the foundation of data mining, several questions focused on current support and future plans for data warehousing. The survey was sent to 124 ARL member libraries. Sixty-five (52%) responded to the survey|--P. 9.

Oracle Database and Data Warehouse 11g

Oracle Database and Data Warehouse 11g
By:Sideris Courseware Corp
Published on 2012 by

This textbook is the first volume of a two-volume set devoted to the subject of Oracle database server and Oracle data warehouse performance tuning. This first volume provides crucial background information about database performance statistics, metrics and baselines. An enormous amount of performance data is generated and presented by the self-monitoring Oracle database, but the meaning and usefulness of the data is not always obvious. Common questions are: What exactly should I be looking for in amongst all this data? What is the meaning of the performance statistics presented? What conclusions should one reach based upon what is observed and what specific tuning actions should be considered? Therefore, this first volume helps one to assess the current performance of the database or the data warehouse, to identify whether or not there is a serious problem, and if so to isolate which areas of the database should be tuned and which tuning techniques might be considered. This textbook will at times include an in-depth discussion of some internal database operations where these are relevant to assessing database performance. Among the specific subjects discussed within this textbook are: How database performance tuning, SQL statement and application tuning, and the overall systems infrastructure configuration contribute to the performance of database installations; contrast online transaction processing applications with data warehouse activity; consider the systems components that interact with a database installation within multi-tiered systems architectures commonly in use today; review the top 10-database configuration mistakes which contribute towards poor performance; review the top 3 host system performance issues found on database servers; host system components that influence database performance, such as operating systems like Linux, processor capabilities and input/output devices; understanding system read and write internals, such as the difference between small reads and writes versus large reads and writes, asynchronous input/output versus synchronous input/output; review the database performance assessment and performance tuning facilities built into the Oracle database server; understanding the benefit of database performance statistics, metrics, alerts, thresholds and baselines; using the Enterprise Manager real-time performance monitors to immediately assess current database performance; interpreting database operational statistics, wait events and time model statistics to assess database performance and identify processing bottlenecks and constraints. The second volume of this textbook set then provides tuning techniques and remedies that can be applied to address specific problems commonly found, such as the performance bottlenecks demonstrated in this textbook.

A Courseware for Data Warehousing

A Courseware for Data Warehousing
By:Manashree Laxmikant Kulkarni,California State University, Sacramento
Published on 2010 by

Data warehousing is one of the important approaches for data integration and data preprocessing. The objective of this project is to develop a web-based interactive courseware to help beginning data warehouse designers to reinforce the key concepts of data warehousing using a case study approach. The case study is to build a bottom up data warehouse for a university student enrollment prediction data mining system. This data warehouse is able to generate summary reports as input data files for a data mining system to predict future student enrollment. The data source include: (1) the enrollment data from California State University at Sacramento, and (2) the related public data of California. In the courseware, we build the data warehouse systematically using a set of four demonstrations covering the following data warehousing topics: fundamentals, design principle, building an enterprise data warehouse using an incremental approach and aggregation. Every demonstration has the capability of data reporting for the end users upon their requests. We integrate the courseware with an introductory data warehousing and data mining class. This class of 20 students evaluated the effectiveness of this tool. Addition of feedback link to the courseware website for the end users is one of the results obtained from this evaluation.

Published on 2017-10-30 by Apress

Learn Business Intelligence Markup Language (Biml) for automating much of the repetitive, manual labor involved in data integration. We teach you how to build frameworks and use advanced Biml features to get more out of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Transact-SQL (T-SQL), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) than you ever thought possible. The first part of the book starts with the basics—getting your development environment configured, Biml syntax, and scripting essentials. Whether a beginner or a seasoned Biml expert, the next part of the book guides you through the process of using Biml to build a framework that captures both your design patterns and execution management. Design patterns are reusable code blocks that standardize the approach you use to perform certain types of data integration, logging, and other key data functions. Design patterns solve common problems encountered when developing data integration solutions. Because you do not have to build the code from scratch each time, design patterns improve your efficiency as a Biml developer. In addition to leveraging design patterns in your framework, you will learn how to build a robust metadata store and how to package your framework into Biml bundles for deployment within your enterprise. In the last part of the book, we teach you more advanced Biml features and capabilities, such as SSAS development, T-SQL recipes, documentation autogeneration, and Biml troubleshooting. The Biml Book: Provides practical and applicable examples Teaches you how to use Biml to reduce development time while improving quality Takes you through solutions to common data integration and BI challenges What You'll Learn Master the basics of Business Intelligence Markup Language (Biml) Study patterns for automating SSIS package generation Build a Biml Framework Import and transform database schemas Automate generation of scripts and projects Who This Book Is For BI developers wishing to quickly locate previously tested solutions, Microsoft BI specialists, those seeking more information about solution automation and code generation, and practitioners of Data Integration Lifecycle Management (DILM) in the DevOps enterprise
